Urban Farming as Solution for Farming in Urban Space

Agriculture has developed many strategies to make farming activities easy and close for public. Urban farming as a strategy for public to plant agricultural products in open space especially in urban areas. Agricultural products such as vegetables (spinach, mustard greens, pakcoy), spices (garlic, shallots, turmeric, kencur), and chilies, tomatoes, cucumbers to eggplant are commonly plants for urban farming.

The purpose of urban farming for keep food reachable and easily distributed for public. In addition, planting agricultural products on vacant land can help absorb pollutants and provide oxygen to living things. Urban farming activities can be carried out in yards, roofs of houses or buildings, and office areas.

One of the urban farming activities in Indonesia was on area under the Becakayu toll road. Planting trees, ornamental plants, and hydroponic plants along the Becakayu toll road stretches for 5 kilometers. Governor of DKI Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono said that the planting of plants along the toll road aims to maintain water quality for PDAM needs and absorb pollutants.

Through urban farming activities, there are benefits derived from planting trees around vacant land such as relieving stress, reducing the risk of flooding, encouraging people's creativity to use used goods and recycling waste, increasing awareness of the importance of farming, encouraging an independent economy to help food distribution more quickly and evenly.

  • Prepare the land that will be used as a place to plant.

  • Determine the right planting medium (polybags, used bottles, cans, PVC pipes).

  • Provide sufficient irrigation for plants.

  • Determine the types of plants that are often consumed.

  • Ensure chemical free fertilizers and treatments.
