Mastering Potato Growth: Mr. Jajang's Key to Victory in Sentra Bertani Competition Garut
25 Jun 2025Potatoes are a leading horticultural commodity for farmers in the highlands of Garut, West Java, due to their high economic value as well as their social and environmental roles. However, potato farmers often face challenges in the field, such as suboptimal yields and inefficient production costs.
To address these challenges, Edufarmers supported by Benih Berkah Berseri (BBB) organized Gebyar Panen Bertani, the grand finale of the Sentra Bertani Competition (SBC), on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the Sudrajat Shooting Field, Yonif 303 Garut. More than just a competition between farmer groups, the program served as an intensive training platform based on the Farmers Field School approach. It aimed to promote the adoption of modern, efficient, and practical farming practices, from variety selection and pest control to cost management.
As a result of the competition, the Cikajang 7 Group from Giriawas Village, led by Pak Jajang, emerged as the winner with a score of 91.13, achieving a harvest yield of 44 tons per hectare in just four months. This victory serves as concrete proof that knowledge-based farming practices and strong collaboration among group members can lead to optimal harvest outcomes.
Pak Jajang shared his farming experience during the competition with his team consistently monitored the plants and applied fertilizers according to their growth stages. Based on his experience, he concluded that the key to a successful potato harvest lies in understanding each stage of plant growth and the specific nutritional needs at every phase.
Thanks to strong collaboration, Edufarmers International extends its sincere gratitude to Benih Berkah Berseri (BBB) as the main sponsor for their commitment to providing high-quality seeds and technical support. Appreciation also goes to the Local Government and the Ministry of Agriculture of West Java Province for contributing valuable insights through educational talk shows that broadened the perspectives of Garut's potato farmers.
Through SBC, Edufarmers aims to continue supporting farmers in adopting efficient, high-quality, and sustainable agricultural practices. With the right combination of practical skills and technical knowledge, the potential for increased potato yields in Garut remains very promising.
