Indonesian Coffee Production Reaches 774.60 Thousand Tons in 2021

Coffee, particularly local coffee, is one of the most widely consumed by many people in Indonesia. This statement is supported by data from the International Coffee Organization (ICO) that shows the trend of local coffee consumption in Indonesia has continued to increase over the last five years, as shown in the graph below. There was an increase of 8.67 percent between the two periods of 2014-2015 and 2018-2019.

It is therefore not surprising that local coffee production continues to increase along with the increase in coffee consumption in the community. It is evident from the amount of Indonesian coffee production, which reached 774.60 tons in 2021. This figure is the highest recorded in the last 5 years.

Most of this amount was contributed by South Sumatra, which is the largest coffee producer in Indonesia, producing 201.40 thousand tons. Followed by Lampung, North Sumatra, and Aceh. making Indonesia the fourth-largest coffee producer in the world.
 

Here are five types of local Indonesian coffee that are well known internationally:

  1. Toraja Arabica coffee, which has been successfully exported to Japan and America, This type of coffee is known for its low acid content.

  2. Kintamani Arabica Coffee, which has a floral and citrus aroma. This coffee has been exported to countries such as Arabia, Japan, and also Europe.

  3. Flores Bajawa Arabica coffee comes from East Nusa Tenggara. The characteristics of this coffee are the dominant tastes of chocolate and vanilla.

  4. Gayo Arabica coffee is one of the coffees that has been recognized for its enjoyment in European countries and has received high marks from the Specialty Coffee Association of America.

  5. Kopi Luwak is produced in Java and Sumatra. Making this coffee is unique enough to make the image of this coffee taste more distinctive and, of course, delicious. Apart from the uniqueness of making this coffee, Kopi Luwak is one of the most expensive coffees in the world.
