Lumpy Skin Disease Attacks Cattle Farm and How to Prevent Them

31 May 2023

As Eid al-Adha 2023 approaches, cattle farms in Indonesia are facing an outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD). Several cattle farms affected by LSD are located in Garut, West Java, Probolinggo, East Java, and Tulang Bawang, Lampung. LSD mainly affects cattle and buffaloes, impacting the quality of farms and the livelihood of breeders.

One of the key characteristics of LSD is the appearance of lumps all over the animal's body, particularly on the neck, back, and stomach.

Lumpy Skin Disease is transmitted through small insects such as flies and mosquitoes, as well as physical contact between infected cattle and other cows through skin wounds, nasal mucus, saliva, and farm or barn equipment (syringes, clothing, and feeding tools).

The symptoms of Lumpy Skin Disease in cattle include:

  • Medium and small lumps all over the body

  • Thickening of the skin in severe cases

  • High fever

  • Loss of appetite

  • Decreased milk production

  • Lethargy

Currently, there is no specific treatment for cattle affected by Lumpy Skin Disease. However, there are treatment and prevention methods to improve the condition of infected cattle, such as providing vaccinations and medication, enhancing feed nutrition, maintaining clean and sterile stables, and isolating infected cattle.
