31 May 2023

On Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023, Edufarmers held a Farmer Field School for maize farmers in Labuan Toposo, Donggala, South Sulawesi. As one of the important activities under the Bertani Untuk Negeri initiative, Maize FDA shared knowledge about GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) with farmers so that they could apply standardized cultivation practices.

To commemorate National Education Day, the Maize commodity FDA held a Farmer Field School for local farmers. Erwin Syahputra, S.P., the Edufarmers Coordinator for Central Sulawesi, opened the activities with a speech

Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is one of the certification systems for good plant cultivation practices, in accordance with specified standards, and it has been recommended based on the area or place of cultivation. As an initial step, farmers need to familiarize themselves with GAP to understand their cultivation processes. In the future, we will focus on applying these practices to solve problems observed in the fields," said Erwin, who also serves as a mentor for BUN 6 Maize.

Sunardin, S.ST, the Labuan Toposo Agricultural Field Extension (PPL), also expressed positive remarks about the implementation of the Farmer Field School for maize farmers. He mentioned that the Farmer Field School significantly contributes to the dissemination of educational information, which in turn enhances productivity and crop yields. Therefore, it is crucial to establish and improve this initiative over time.

"The presence of students within farming communities greatly facilitates the dissemination and reception of agricultural information, including technical aspects and government policies related to agriculture. The field schools and demonstration plots created by students are expected to transform farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and skills, leading to the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies. As part of BPP (Badan Penyuluhan Pertanian), we hope that this collaboration will continue to grow and improve in the future," added Sunardin, S.ST, the PPL for Labuan Toposo.
