Smart Farming as Agritech Solution for Food Security in Indonesia

31 Mar 2023

As an agrarian country, Indonesia has abundant natural resources and extensive agricultural land. Food security is the most important aspect of Indonesia's agricultural industry, and it must be enhanced in order to keep food availability and quality. Therefore, it is necessary to have a good Good Agricultural Practice (GAP).

One way to improve the agricultural sector is by revolutionizing technology and moving towards digital transformation through the development and use of technology. Smart farming, as a farming technology product, can help producers make their job more effective, measurable, and integrated. Smart farming techniques that use artificial intelligence (AI), information technology (IT), the Internet of Things (IoT), and electrical devices will correctly track farming circumstances in terms of energy, time, and harvesting.

Some of the technologies produced by smart farming are:

  1. Agricultural drone sprayer to spread water and fertiliser

  2. Drones to gather data of current situation from a distance

  3. Ground and weather sensors

  4. Blockchain to connect farmers and consumers regarding agricultural products

Agricultural land must be managed effectively from upstream to downstream to ensure food availability and productivity throughout the region.

"If we have a high food production, we do not need an immense amount of land; instead, we need technology. According to Marsudi Wahyu Kisworo of the National Research and Innovation Agency, the world's largest food exporters are employing technological innovations aggressively, beginning with upstream and ending with downstream technology, resulting in high food productivity. (BRIN).

To positively transform the agriculture sector, powerful contributions and understanding are required from all parties, including farmers, the younger population, the government, the business sector, and agritech startups.
