Edufarmers Enlightenment Day 2023: Bridging Agricultural Research and Practice

29 Dec 2023

As a year-end conclusion, on December 19, 2023, Edufarmers held the Edufarmers Enlightenment Day 2023: Bridging Agricultural Research and Practice event to provide insights into agricultural innovation and enhance collaboration among stakeholders in the application of agricultural technology.

The virtual event successfully engaged over 250 participants from across Indonesia to attend and discuss the proper handling and implementation of agricultural practices. With experienced speakers and practitioners in their respective fields, Edufarmers Enlightenment Day 2023 featured a main event followed by five optional topics that participants could freely choose from.

The main event featured Dr. Elza Surmaini, S.P., M.Si. (Senior Expert Researcher, Climate & Atmosphere Research Center BRIN) and Bayu Dwi Apri Nugroho, S.T.P., M.Agr., Ph.D. (Associate Professor in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada), discussing the appropriate application of agricultural technology for the current conditions in Indonesia.

Addressing climate change and the agricultural conditions in Indonesia, Dr. Elza Surmaini, S.P., M.Si., emphasized that the agricultural sector has become a victim of climate change. Therefore, environmentally friendly agricultural adaptation is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Adaptation should be prioritized as the primary step in facing mitigation, with the goal of jointly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"One of them is the application of low greenhouse gas emission technology synergized with adaptation through emission reduction measures and strengthening adaptation. This needs to be socialized and implemented in the community," she stated.

In connection with the agricultural conditions in Indonesia, Bayu Dwi Apri Nugroho, S.T.P., M.Agr., Ph.D., explained that smart agricultural technology can be adopted by modern farmers to increase productivity and cost efficiency in land maintenance. With the adoption of smart agricultural technology, all aspects of agricultural issues can be monitored comprehensively, from upstream to downstream, improving accessibility.

"Technology in agriculture will be more beneficial in problem-solving when applied in an agricultural ecosystem, including in the availability and security of food with the concept of traceability. However, to achieve the success of the agricultural ecosystem, there needs to be commitment from various parties so that agricultural productivity can be effectively realized," Bayu expressed during his session.

After the main session concluded, participants could enter one of the five optional rooms, equally engaging as the previous session, to discuss research results and experiences from practitioners on the following topics:

  • Agricultural Technology Innovation

  • Optimization of Agricultural Inputs

  • Technical Guidance

  • Livestock Farming

  • Workshop

The event concluded by summarizing the discussion outcomes from each optional session, followed by a group photo.
